William Ames speaks of the twofold consequences of sin, namely, guiltiness and filthiness. Punishment has a direct connection to guilt, which is culpability or blameworthiness for having sinned. Filthiness has reference to spiritual pollution or defilement, “whereby a sinner is made destitute of all comeliness.”

Ames, The Marrow of Divinity, 53.
