A sinner can no more repent and believe without the Holy Spirit's aid than he can create a world.

John 1:29 - "The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." John 1:36 - "And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God !" __________________________________________
In the first instance, John draws our thoughts to the work of Christ "which taketh away the sin of the world". The second time, he calls on us to simply "Behold the Lamb of God," this time pointing to His worth. Behold Him, adore Him, delight in His person! Is there a better way to occupy our time and attention ?

JESUS, cast a look on me;
Give me sweet simplicity;
Make me poor, and keep me low,
Seeking only thee to know.
[Weaned from my lordly self,
Weaned from the miser's pelf,
Weaned from the scorner's ways,
Weaned from the lust of praise.]
All that feeds my busy pride,
Cast it evermore aside;
Bid my will to thine submit;
Lay me humbly at thy feet.
Make me like a little child,
Of my strength and wisdom spoiled,
Seeing only in thy light,
Walking only in thy might.
Leaning on thy loving breast,
Where a weary soul may rest;
Feeling well the peace of God
Flowing from thy preacious blood.
In this poture let me live,
And hosannas daily give;
In this temper let me die,
And hosannas ever cry. | Praying for humility,-- "And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And Peter went out, and wept bitterly." - Luke 22:61-2;
"Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." - Matthew 5:3

John 14:23 - "Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him."
THOUGHT - This chapter begins with Jesus promising that he is going back to heaven to prepare a place for us. Now, however, he wants us to know that we don't have to wait until heaven to be in the presence of God. As we love God and obey his Word, God comes and makes his home with us. Isn't it an amazing and gracious thought: God, the Creator of the Universe, the Holy One of Israel lives in me!
PRAYER - For your abiding presence within me, O God, I thank and praise you. May my life reflect the holiness and grace of your presence in all that I do, think, and say. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen. |

"And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him." - Acts 5:32.
THOUGHT - Of all the many gifts God gives, the gift of his presence in us
through his Holy Spirit is among the most precious. The Spirit's
presence makes us God's temple (1.Corinthians 6:19). The Spirit intercedes
for us according to the will of God when we pray (Romans 8:26-27).
The Spirit helps us overcome the pull of our flesh (Romans 8:13-14).
The Spirit gives us strength in our inner being (Ephesians 3:16). In
other words, the Spirit is at work to transform us to the character
of Christ. Let's thank God for his holy presence in us through the
Holy Spirit.
PRAYER - Heavenly Father, thank you so much for your Holy Spirit who even now is
interceding for me as I pray. Please strengthen me through your
Spirit as I seek to live a holy life dedicated to you. Dear Father,
it is my heart's desire for you to transform me by your Spirit to
be more like your Son in character and compassion. In Jesus' name I
pray. Amen. |
